AI Shopping Agents: What Ecommerce Businesses Need to Know

What AI shopping agents are, how they find and buy products today, which channels exist, what merchants control, and how to prepare data and checkout.

Quick answer

AI shopping agents are assistants that search, compare and help buy products for a shopper. As of September 2026, shoppers can discover products through assistants such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot; some surfaces let them buy inside the assistant, while others send them to the merchant's checkout. Merchants stay merchant of record. What you control is the input: accurate, complete product data and feeds, correct price, stock and shipping, clear policies, a reliable checkout and genuine reviews. There's no special markup that makes a store “agent-ready”.

How an AI Shopping Agent Works

The diagram above shows a typical flow. A shopper describes what they want; the agent searches product catalogs and feeds, asks clarifying questions, compares options and presents a shortlist. If the shopper chooses to buy, the agent either hands off to the merchant's checkout or, on supported surfaces, completes checkout through a protocol with the shopper's confirmation. The merchant fulfils the order and handles service.

This is different from AI agents a retailer runs internally for operations, covered in AI agents in retail and ecommerce.

Where Shopping Agents Operate Today

Availability changes frequently. As of September 2026:

ChatGPTProduct discovery; Shopify merchants' products available, with checkout on the merchant's storeShopify Help Center
Google AI Mode and GeminiProduct discovery via Merchant Center; UCP-powered checkout in early access for eligible US, Canada and Australia listingsGoogle Merchant Center Help
Microsoft CopilotProduct discovery; direct checkout available for Shopify merchants when activatedShopify Help Center

Worth noting

OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT with the Agentic Commerce Protocol in September 2025. In March 2026, OpenAI said Instant Checkout was moving to ChatGPT apps, with ACP remaining the infrastructure (Digital Commerce 360). Check each channel's current terms before planning around a feature.

What Merchants Control

Platforms don't publish full ranking rules for agent results, but every documented system reads the same inputs.

InputWhat good looks like
Product titlesProduct type plus the attribute shoppers ask about
DescriptionsSpecific facts: materials, dimensions, use cases, what's included
Attributes and variantsStructured size, colour, material, compatibility, grouped variants
IdentifiersBrand, GTIN or MPN where they exist
Price and availabilityAccurate and current across site and feeds
Shipping and returnsCosts, speed and policies stated clearly
ReviewsGenuine, visible, with detail
ImagesClear product images meeting feed requirements

Product Data Comes First

Agents compare products on facts. A product described as “the perfect everyday essential” gives an agent nothing to match against a request for “a waterproof jacket under 500 grams”. Structured attributes, consistent units and complete feeds make products eligible to be recommended at all. See product data for AI search and ecommerce product feeds.

Checkout and Payments

When an agent completes a purchase, the checkout still runs on the merchant's systems. OpenAI's ACP documentation states that OpenAI is not the merchant of record and that checkout state and payment processing occur on the merchant's systems (OpenAI). Google's UCP-powered checkout keeps the merchant as seller of record and currently uses payment methods saved in Google Wallet (Google Merchant Center Help). Your checkout rules, taxes, shipping and fraud checks still apply.

Trust, Authorization and Risk

Agent purchases raise questions: did the shopper authorize this, is the request genuine, and who is accountable if something goes wrong? Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), announced in September 2025, addresses this with verifiable user authorization (Google Cloud). For merchants, practical steps are clear policies, fraud screening that treats agent traffic appropriately, and service processes that work for orders placed through assistants.

Measuring Agent-Driven Sales

  • Channel attribution in your platform (Shopify attributes orders to the originating AI channel)
  • Referrer data from AI assistants in analytics
  • UTM parameters on links where you can set them
  • Feed and catalog diagnostics for disapproved products
  • Customer service tags for agent-originated orders

What's Uncertain

Several things are unsettled: how agents will rank merchants, whether shoppers will trust agents with routine purchases without confirming each one, how returns and disputes will work at scale, which protocols become dominant, and how paid placements will appear in assistants. Plan for the durable foundations rather than any single channel.

Preparation Checklist

  • Complete, accurate product data with structured attributes
  • Clean feeds with no disapprovals in key channels
  • Current price, stock and shipping everywhere
  • Clear, published returns and service policies
  • Genuine reviews visible on product pages
  • Channel settings reviewed (e.g. Shopify's Agentic sales channel)
  • Attribution set up for AI referrals and channels

Conclusion

AI shopping agents are a real, still-maturing channel. Merchants stay responsible for the order and can't control rankings directly, but they do control the data agents read and the experience after the click.
