Ecommerce Traffic but No Sales: What Should You Fix?

A diagnostic framework for stores with traffic but no sales: check traffic quality, landing pages, product pages, cart, checkout, payment and tracking.

Quick answer

When a store has traffic but no sales, diagnose before you fix. First check that tracking is right and orders aren't simply being missed. Then read the funnel by traffic source and device: traffic, landing page, product views, add to cart, checkout, payment. Find the first stage where visitors drop far more than elsewhere, then investigate that stage. Common causes are poor-fit traffic, pages that don't match the ad, weak product explanation or trust, prices and shipping revealed late, checkout friction, failing payments and technical errors. Fix the first broken stage, then move down the funnel.

Diagnose Before You Redesign

“No sales” is a symptom with many possible causes, and the most expensive response, a redesign, fixes only some of them. A store can be well designed and still fail because the traffic is wrong, a payment method is broken on one device or delivery costs appear only at the end. The framework below, shown in the diagram above, works through the journey in order and uses evidence at each stage.

Step 0: Check the Tracking

Before diagnosing behaviour, check the numbers. Compare orders in your platform with conversions in your analytics tool, place a test order and confirm it's tracked once, check that bots and internal traffic aren't inflating sessions, and check whether consent settings remove a large share of visits. A store that “gets no sales” sometimes has sales that analytics isn't recording, or traffic that isn't real.

The Diagnostic Framework

Work through the stages in order. The first stage that performs clearly worse than the others is usually where to start.

Wrong Traffic

Traffic that was never likely to buy can't be fixed on the site. Look for campaigns with very short sessions, broad or informational search terms, audiences outside your delivery area, influencer traffic expecting a different price point and bot spikes. Fixes happen in targeting, keywords, creative and landing page alignment. See traffic but no leads for the same problem on lead-generation sites.

Weak Value Proposition

If visitors can't tell within seconds what you sell, who it's for and why to buy from you, they leave. Check landing pages and the homepage for vague slogans, missing product categories and claims that don't differentiate. Five-second tests with people unfamiliar with the brand are a quick way to check.

Poor Product Positioning

Products can be good and still not sell if the page doesn't explain their benefit, who they suit and how they compare with alternatives. Read reviews and support questions for what customers are unsure about, and check whether the page answers it. See product page traffic but no sales.

Trust Issues

New stores and unfamiliar brands face a trust gap: is this real, will it arrive, what if it's wrong? Look for missing reviews, unclear returns, hidden contact details, inconsistent design and aggressive pop-ups. Baymard's checkout research found 19% of shoppers who abandoned during checkout said they didn't trust the site with their card information.

Poor UX

Usability problems make shopping slow or confusing: navigation labels that don't match how customers think, filters that don't help, variant pickers that fail, errors that clear forms. Watch recordings of sessions that reached a product but didn't add to cart, and run a few user tests on the key tasks. See ecommerce website design.

Pricing and Shipping

Price is judged against alternatives and against the total cost. In Baymard's survey of US shoppers who abandoned during checkout, 40% cited extra costs such as shipping, tax and fees being too high. Show delivery costs and thresholds early, explain what justifies the price and check whether competitors offer something materially cheaper or faster.

Product Page, Mobile and Checkout Problems

Most stores lose the most visitors between product view and purchase. Check product pages for missing information near the button, mobile layouts for key content pushed out of view, and checkout for forced account creation, long forms or missing payment methods. See add to cart but no purchase and why customers abandon checkout.

Technical Problems

Technical failures are often invisible from the office: an add-to-cart button that fails in one browser, a variant that can't be selected, an app that breaks the cart, a payment method that fails on mobile, very slow pages on older phones. Test key journeys on several devices and browsers, check error tracking or recordings for JavaScript errors and dead clicks, and review payment failure reports.

Analytics Problems

Beyond tracking accuracy, check that you can see the funnel at all: product views, add-to-carts, checkout starts and purchases, broken down by source and device. Without that, every fix is a guess. GA4's recommended ecommerce events, such as view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout and purchase, provide this structure. See ecommerce conversion funnel.

A Quick Diagnostic Checklist

  • Orders in the platform match conversions in analytics
  • Traffic isn't dominated by bots or irrelevant regions
  • Conversion compared by source, campaign and device
  • Landing pages match the ads and links that send traffic
  • Visitors can tell what you sell within seconds
  • Product pages show price, delivery, returns and proof near the button
  • Add to cart, cart and checkout work on phones and main browsers
  • Shipping costs visible before checkout
  • Test orders succeed with every payment method
  • Recordings reviewed for the stage with the biggest drop

Common Mistakes

  • Buying more of the same traffic
  • Redesigning before diagnosing
  • Trusting analytics without checking it
  • Looking only at the blended conversion rate
  • Copying tactics from other stores
  • Discounting to mask a product page or trust problem

Conclusion

Traffic without sales is a diagnosis problem first. Check the data, segment the funnel, find the first stage that fails and investigate it with evidence, fixing traffic, pages, costs, checkout or technical issues as the evidence shows. FAQ

Common questions

Usually because of one or more of: traffic that was never likely to buy, landing pages that don't match what visitors expected, products that aren't clearly explained or trusted, costs revealed late, friction at checkout or payment, technical errors, or broken tracking that hides real sales. Diagnose which before fixing.
