Shopify custom app development: when a custom app makes sense

A custom Shopify app is infrastructure, not a feature. Here is when building one is justified, and when a third-party app still wins.

A custom app is infrastructure, not a feature

Businesses build custom Shopify apps to solve problems that are specific to how they operate — syncing orders into an ERP system, applying pricing logic based on internal rules, automating a reporting process, or giving internal teams a tool that lives inside the Shopify admin they already use every day. It's a different category of investment than installing an app: you're building something only your store runs, and only your team maintains.

That distinction matters when scoping one. A custom app is closer to internal software than a storefront feature, and it should be evaluated with the same rigor — what does it need to do, who maintains it, and what happens when Shopify's platform changes underneath it.

Third-party app vs. custom app

Neither is universally better — the right choice depends on how specific your requirement is.

When a third-party app is still the better call

If a maintained app already does what you need — even at 80% fit — that's usually still the better choice over custom development, especially early on. The ongoing maintenance and security responsibility of owning custom code is easy to underestimate until you're the one holding it. Build custom only once you've confirmed, specifically, that no existing app or combination of apps gets you there without significant compromise.

Key takeaway

Custom development should follow a proven, specific gap — not a general sense that 'we probably need something custom eventually.'

What a custom Shopify app build actually involves

Modern custom app development runs through Shopify's Dev Dashboard and CLI, built on the GraphQL Admin API — the current standard, since the REST Admin API is now legacy. If the app needs its own interface inside the Shopify admin, App Bridge handles the communication between that interface and Shopify's dashboard, covering things like navigation and in-context notifications.

Scoping this properly means being clear upfront about what data the app touches, what it automates, and who's responsible for keeping it working as Shopify's platform evolves — the same questions our automation work starts with for any custom system integration.

Common questions

A private application built specifically for one store, using Shopify's Admin API and, where needed, embedded UI in the Shopify admin — as opposed to a public app installed from the Shopify App Store that many stores share.
