Agriculture Software Development in Australia: Farm Data, Sensors and Operational Workflows

Agriculture software in Australia: farm records, NLIS livestock traceability, sensors, offline field apps, the Farm Data Code and integrations.

01

What should agriculture software do?

Agriculture software should make on-farm records easy to capture in the field, even without coverage; turn sensor and equipment data into timely alerts; support compliance records such as livestock movements under NLIS; integrate with accounting, supply-chain and traceability systems; and respect farmers' ownership and control of their data. Established farm management products cover many needs; custom development suits distinctive operations, integrations and supply-chain programs.

This guide is for farm businesses, agribusinesses, supply-chain organisations and agtech product teams in Australia. For AI uses, see AI agents in agriculture.

02

Key takeaways

  • Design field apps offline-first and test them in real conditions.
  • Capture records once, at the point of work.
  • Support livestock eID and movement records where relevant.
  • Start sensor projects with one measurable decision.
  • Follow the principles of the Australian Farm Data Code for data ownership and portability.
  • Integrate with accounting and supply-chain systems rather than duplicating data.

Livestock traceability: NLIS and eID

The National Livestock Identification System records livestock identification and movements. For sheep and farmed goats, electronic identification became mandatory nationally for animals born from 1 January 2025, with requirements for other animals leaving a property phased in by state, generally from 1 January 2027; Victoria already required eID (Business Queensland; NSW DPI). Software that manages livestock should capture eID tag numbers from readers, link them to mobs and treatments, and support movement records and reporting. Confirm requirements with your state agriculture department; dates and exemptions differ.

05

Offline field apps and connectivity

  • Store forms, maps and reference data on the device.
  • Capture photos, GPS and timestamps offline; sync in the background.
  • Show clearly what has and has not synced.
  • Resolve conflicts predictably when two people edit the same record.
  • Work with gloves, in sunlight and on older devices.
  • Consider on-farm networks, satellite internet or LoRaWAN for sensors where mobile coverage is poor.
  • See offline-first mobile app development.
06

Sensors and IoT

Start with a decision: alert when a trough is low, a gate is open, or soil moisture drops below a threshold. Choose sensors and networks that suit the distance and power available, plan calibration and maintenance, and design for missing data. Store raw readings with timestamps and device IDs, and alert people only when action is needed. Broad analytics and AI come after reliable data.

07

Data ownership: the Australian Farm Data Code

The National Farmers' Federation's Australian Farm Data Code is a voluntary framework for businesses handling farmers' data, covering transparency, fair use, farmer control, portability and security, and some products are certified against it (NFF). For product teams: write plain-language data terms, let farmers export and delete their data, explain who data is shared with, and secure it. If personal information is involved and your organisation is covered, the Privacy Act also applies.

08

Integrations

Common integrations include accounting (Xero or MYOB), livestock traceability databases, processors and buyers for supply-chain programs, weather data, and equipment platforms. Decide which system owns each record and reconcile regularly. See accounting software integration and API integration reliability.

09

Hypothetical example: a mixed farming operation

This example is hypothetical. A mixed sheep and cropping business in western New South Wales records treatments on paper and phones in livestock movements. It adopts a farm management product for paddocks and crops, and builds a small offline app that reads sheep eID tags via a Bluetooth reader, links them to mobs and treatments, and syncs at the homestead. Water troughs get level sensors on a LoRaWAN network with SMS alerts. Data terms let the business export everything at any time.

10

Common mistakes

  • Apps that assume mobile coverage.
  • Sensor projects without a clear decision or maintenance plan.
  • Re-keying records into several systems.
  • Unclear data terms or no export.
  • Ignoring state-specific livestock requirements.

Conclusion

Agriculture software succeeds when it fits the paddock, not just the office: offline capture, simple workflows, reliable alerts, support for traceability, and clear data ownership. Buy established products where they fit and build for distinctive operations and integrations.

FAQ

Common questions.

Commonly: farm records (paddocks, inputs, activities), livestock or crop management, compliance records such as chemical use and livestock movements, labour and equipment tracking, accounting, and increasingly sensor data such as water, weather and soil moisture. Many established farm management products cover these; custom work suits distinctive operations, integrations or supply-chain programs.
